- Chevrolet Performance sponsors NHRA’s biggest event
- Camaro racers focused on wins in Pro Stock, sportsman classes
- Don ‘The Snake’ Prudhomme is Grand Marshal; Linda Vaughn and Courtney Hansen are Official Co-Starters
INDIANAPOLIS – From the sportsman ranks to Pro Stock, Chevrolet racers and fans will have much to cheer about at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway, kicking off Wednesday, Aug. 28 and running through Monday, Sept. 2.
“Chevrolet Performance is proud to be part of the U.S. Nationals, the largest and most historic race on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing schedule,” said Jim Campbell, GM U.S. vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “Drawing on more than 100 years of motorsports heritage, Chevrolet Performance offers an unmatched portfolio of crate engines, specialty parts and track-ready COPO Camaro race cars.”
Chevrolet has earned NHRA’s Manufacturer’s Cup 19 times since it was first awarded in 1964. That’s more than any other manufacturer.
NHRA legend Don Prudhomme will serve as the Grand Marshal for the event. Linda Vaughn and Courtney Hansen will serve as the race’s official co-starters. All three will make personal appearances and sign autographs at the Chevrolet display throughout the six-day event. The display will also offer race fans looks at the latest Chevrolet race cars, including the COPO Camaro, new production cars and trucks, crate engines, transmissions and street-level performance parts.
This year’s event will feature 11 hours of coverage on ESPN2 and ESPN2HD, including six hours on Monday, Sept. 2, from noon to 6 p.m. (ET).
In Pro Stock, Camaro drivers Greg Anderson, Jason Line and others will try to make it a second consecutive all-Chevy final at the U.S. Nationals for the ultra-competitive class.
Nearly 20 COPO Camaros – the limited-production race car developed by Chevrolet Performance specifically for NHRA’s Stock and Super Stock classes – are expected to compete this weekend, shaking up the sportsman field with wheels-up matches against longtime manufacturer rivals.
The Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals is the final event in the 18-race NHRA regular season and the top 10 fields in each of the four pro categories will be finalized there for the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship, NHRA’s six-race playoffs.
Grand Marshal Don Prudhomme
Grand Marshal Don “The Snake” Prudhomme’s 30-year driving record is complemented by a successful stint as a car owner, with his list of wins, records and other accomplishments too lengthy to list, but including 49 national event wins and breaking the 5-second and 250-mph barriers for Funny Cars.
With former partner Tom “The Mongoo$e” McEwan, Prudhomme helped revolutionize sponsorship support in drag racing with their groundbreaking Hot Wheels deal, which not only put the iconic toy manufacturer on their respective race cars, but launched a successful line of cross-promotional toys.
Prudhomme and McEwan’s unique arrangement is depicted in the new motion picture “Snake & Mongoo$e,” which will be shown as a special, red-carpet event on Thursday, Aug. 29 at the Regal Shiloh Crossing Stadium 18 movie complex, located at 10400 E. U.S. Highway 36, in Avon, Ind. – about five miles from Lucas Oil Raceway. The event begins at 5 p.m., with a screening at 5:30 p.m.
Prudhomme and McEwan will make appearances at the screening and “The Snake” will hold autograph sessions at the Chevrolet display at Lucas Oil Raceway.
Official Co-Starters Linda Vaughn and Courtney Hansen
Georgia-born Linda Vaughn, known as the first lady of motorsports, kicked off a career as an automotive ambassador in 1961, when she was named Miss Atlanta International Raceway. After being featured in Esquire, she won a national contest coordinated by Hot Rod and took the role as Miss Hurst Golden Shifter. She remains an icon of the performance and racing worlds and continues to make appearances at automotive events across the country.
Courtney Hansen is in her eighth season as the host of Spike TV’s “Powerblock” series of automotive shows, after serving as the popular co-host of “Overhaulin’” on TLC.
