GM Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer and Controller
Nick S. Cyprus was named Controller and Chief Accounting Officer of General Motors Corporation, effective December 1, 2006, and on August 4, 2009, was appointed Vice President, Controller and Chief Accounting Officer. He is a member of the CEO's Senior Leadership Group.
His key responsibilities include reporting of financial results to the CEO, CFO and Audit Committee of the Board, leadership and oversight of shared services functions for GM worldwide including inventory fixed assets, payroll, accounts payable, billing and receivables and leading SOX 404 for GM. He also oversees external reporting, development of accounting policies and consolidations process. His key accomplishments include redesigning the Controller’s Organization for General Motors and staffing the organization with world-class accounting talent. He also developed accounting training programs to assure both continuing education requirements for certified public and chartered accountants are met and to train all accountants in key high-risk accounting areas.
Before joining GM, Cyprus served as Senior Vice President, Controller, and Chief Accounting Officer for The Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc., in New York. At Interpublic Group, Cyprus developed the Controller's Organization, led the company's compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation and oversaw its financial control processes worldwide.
Prior to that, Cyprus was Vice President, Controller, and Chief Accounting Officer from 1999 to 2004 at AT&T Corporation, where he held several positions over 22 years. Before he joined AT&T in 1982, Cyprus worked as a senior financial analyst for Amerada Hess Corporation in New York, as a senior corporate internal auditor for Suburban Propane in New Jersey, and as a staff auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers in New York.
Cyprus holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration from New York University's Stern School of Business and a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, graduating magna cum laude from both universities. He is also a certified public accountant.
Cyprus is a member of FEI's Committee on Corporate Reporting as well as CCR PCAOB Subcommittee Chair. He is also a member of the New Jersey Society of CPAs. He was recognized by the New Jersey State Society of Certified Public Accountants as the Outstanding Business Leader of the Year in 1999 and by the Institute of Management Accountants as the Financial Executive of the Year in 2000.
Cyprus is a member of the board of directors for Reader’s Digest and DigitalGlobe, Inc., and is the Chairman of the Audit Committee at DigitalGlobe, Inc. Nick’s hobbies include competitive sports, fishing and boating.
