Strong Sales for Chevrolet Sales Thailand Continue in September

  • Domestic market performance is led by strong demand for the Colorado, the Captiva and the all-new Thai-built Sonic
  • Total sales increase by 130%
  • Southeast Asia markets see increase in interest

Bangkok, Thailand – Chevrolet Sales (Thailand) continues on the upswing momentum created by record-breaking sales performance from the previous three months by recording 7,177 units sold in September. This brings the total vehicles sold since the beginning of 2012 to 52,945, representing a 130% increase when compared to the same period in 2011.

The Colorado continues to be Chevy’s top performer on the domestic market with 2,984 units sold while the recently launched all-new Thai-built Sonic subcompact comes in second with 1,372 sales, beating Chevrolet’s own sales target for September by 212 units. The Captiva 990 sold units while the other recently launched model, the Trailblazer, hot on its heels with 920 vehicles sold.

With a total of 52,945 vehicles sold since the beginning of the year, Chevrolet’s foothold in the Thai automotive industry has grown from 2.3% to 5.6% when compared to the same period in 2011. The continued strong sales performance is largely fueled by highly competitive vehicles recently introduced in every major market segments in Thailand and in the region.

Chevrolet is increasing its presence in other Southeast Asian markets as well. Chevrolet’s market share in ASEAN has nearly tripled to 3.1% from 1.3% in September 2011. This represents 8262 cars sold last month in total. Best performers are Indonesia with 411 units, Malaysia with 210 units, Philippines with 205 units, Singapore with 184 units. And in the meantime, Laos realized its best performance with 135 units.

“Domestically, Chevrolet has seen outstanding sales figures in the past few months and we continue to solidify our presence in overseas markets. Sonic was recently launched in the Philippines and was presented at the Indonesian International Motor Show together with the Trailblazer.  We expect all these new models to be equally successful in these markets ", said Antonio Zara, Vice President Sales, Marketing and After Sales GM Thailand.

“Our new models have been performing exceptionally well and the take-up rate for the Sonic has even surpassed our expectations. So we are now ramping up production of Sonic to meet the demand while the new Sonic hatchback is ready to arrive in the dealers showrooms. This is a true testament to Chevrolet’s commitment to building the best vehicles available on the market.”

September also marked the launch of the Chevrolet Trailblazer exports, with 1,706 exported from Thailand during the month.  The Trailblazer exports are expected to grow next year with key export destinations to Southeast Asia, South Africa, Russia, the Middle East, Australia and Latin America markets.  The launch of Trailblazer exports is the latest step in GM’s global and regional expansion, highlighting GM Thailand’s world-class Rayong-based facility as a state-of-the-art manufacturing hub.
