Motor vehicle sales figures released through the Department of Trade and Industry today show continued, albeit somewhat muted, growth in vehicle sales during June. “The 53 562 sales reported through the DTI are up 3,3% on June last year as the industry adjusts to real market expectations for growth year-on-year,” says Malcolm Gauld, GMSA’s Vice President Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing.
“The total market is running 6,8% ahead of last year for the six months to date and is trending towards the realistic growth expectation of 5% for the year. Passenger vehicles accounted for 37 057 of the total sales running just 3,2% ahead of last June with continued support from private buyers driving sales in this sector. After a couple of strong months the light commercial sector grew by just 2,3% compared to the same month last year. In contrast the medium commercial sector grew by 20,5%, albeit off a small base.
“Daily sales through the dealer channel were up on May with the daily average of 2 393 units being derived from 3 fewer selling days in June compared to May. This would indicate a higher level of showroom traffic encouraged by a mix of incentive selling and hedging against price escalations. Sales were buoyed further during June by a high level of activity in the government and rental sectors.
“The market continues to be supported by an intense level of promotional activity aimed at maintaining the interest of private buyers. Against this background we can expect a period of consolidation in the industry over the coming months. The relatively low cost of finance remains a positive for buyers but the impact of imported inflation as a result of the reduced value of our currency will undoubtedly place upward pressure on new vehicle prices.
“Within the GMSA product range the Chevrolet Utility continues to be a favourite amongst buyers in the sub-1 ton market with 1 672 of the popular small pick-ups delivered during June. The announcement of the Spark range for 2013 saw the addition of the Spark Pronto to our light commercial range as a unique urban delivery solution that is fully compliant with VAT legislation making it an excellent value for money proposition for any business that has the need to move small packages in an urban environment. During June deliveries of the locally manufactured Pronto were 74 units as the vehicle continues to establish itself in a previously untapped market opened up to GMSA through the commitment to local manufacture of the Spark range of small vehicles.
“In the medium passenger sector the Chevrolet Cruze remained a popular choice in June with 511 deliveries while the Chevrolet Spark drew strong support in the small car segment with 484 sales.
