BANGKOK, THAILAND – General Motors sold 7,073 vehicles in Southeast Asia in June 2013, representing a 2 percent increase over the same period in 2012, and demonstrating a successful product line up across multiple vehicle segments in showrooms throughout the region. In the first six month of 2013, Chevrolet sold 41,866 vehicles in the region, an increase of five percent on an annual basis.
The all new Spin broke sales records in Indonesia, selling 1,294 units in June and adding to the highest sales month in GM Indonesia’s history with 1,761 units sold across all vehicle lines, a 105 percent increase over May. In addition, Q2 sales in Indonesia (3,345 units) represents a 142 percent increase over Q1 2013 sales, and YTD sales of 4,728 units - a YOY increase of 82 percent.
Chevrolet Philippines saw another record-breaking month with sales of 456 units in June, an 84 percent growth over the same period last year. The Chevrolet Trailblazer led that growth with 242 units sold in June. Sales of the Trailblazer have consistently increased month over month since its launch in the Philippines in November, 2012. Additional markets showing healthy performance included Singapore (211 units) and Malaysia (176 units).
Chevrolet sales in Thailand totaled 4,073 units in June, a decrease from May but in line with the general market trend in the automotive industry in Thailand. Specific market segments saw a small increase in sales due to strong campaigns throughout Chevrolet’s national dealer network. Sales for the latest addition to Chevrolet’s product line-up, the all new Spin, are beginning to emerge following its successful launch in Indonesia. Year-to-date sales in Thailand for the first half of 2013 total 30,896 units.
The Chevrolet Colorado continued to lead sales with 1,665 units sold, followed by the popular Chevrolet Sonic, selling 685 units. Additional Chevrolet models saw healthy results in June 2013, including sales of the Captiva, which increased by 32 percent over May (634 units); the Trailblazer (571 units); the Cruze, which increased by 16 percent from May (474 units); and the Aveo (36 units).
“The automotive industry is experiencing a slip in the market compared to 2012,” said Mr. Gustavo Colossi, Chevrolet Sales Thailand’s and GM Southeast Asia Operations’ Vice-President of Sales, Marketing and Aftersales. “The government’s First Car Buyer Scheme last year generated a surge in retail sales that, when compared to normal market growth trends, created sales growth that was significantly above-average. This year, we are experience sales revenue that is back to the normal consumer cycle.”
Chevrolet’s latest variant of the Sonic, featuring an all-new lightweight and high-efficiency 1.6 liter engine, brings two segment firsts to the market: it is the first vehicle in its segment to offer E85 capability, and the first vehicle in its segment to offer an infotainment system, known as the Chevrolet ‘MyLink.’ The MyLink system has a seven in-touch screen system along with connectivity with smartphones. The new Sonic 1.6 will be available in showrooms in July.
