- Chevrolet’s YTD sales in Thailand grew 31 percent compared with same period in 2012
- Figures also prove Sonic to be a favorite with Thai motorists since its launch
- New dealership to open in Cambodia as part of regional growth strategy
Bangkok, Thailand: Chevrolet Sales Thailand (Chevrolet) continued to grow and set new sales records, this time scoring a best-ever February with sales of 5,806 vehicles. This represents a YOY (Year-on-Year) growth of 11 percent compared with 5,216 units in February 2012. Chevrolet’s YTD (Year-to-Date) volume is 11,845 units, a 31-percent increase over 9,001 units over the same period in 2012.
Leading Chevrolet’s sales growth in Thailand is the Colorado pickup truck – a total of 2,592 units were sold in February. The newly-launched Sonic sub-compact car, now in its first full sales year, sold 1,327 units. In January 2013, due to the popularity of the Sonic, Thailand was ranked the fourth largest Sonic market worldwide, after the US, China and Mexico. This places Thailand ahead of markets like Russia, Brazil, Argentina and Italy – testament to the success of the Sonic and its popularity amongst Thai motorists.
The third best-selling model in February 2013 was the Trailblazer SUV, of which 677 units were sold. Against a slew of highly-competitive offering from other manufacturers, the Trailblazer was recently recognized by CAR Magazine (South Africa) as the ‘Top Buy’ in the ‘large SUV’ category in the magazine’s ‘Top 12 Best Buys for 2013’. The magazine’s eagerly-awaited annual list consists of a selection of vehicles recommended by CAR’s editorial team in 12 distinct segments. The Trailblazer was recognized for its practical seven-seat layout, specifications and off-road capability.
Other models that contributed to Chevrolet’s sales growth include the Cruze (597 units), Captiva (572 units) and the Aveo CNG (41 units), the latter continuing to offer motorists low fuel and running costs in a full-sized sedan.
Chevrolet Sales Thailand’s and GM Southeast Asia Operations’ Vice-President of Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, Mr. Gustavo Daniel Colossi, said, “In addition to great products, we must also credit our growing family of dealers for contributing to our continued growth. Our sales and customer-care campaigns are also contributing factors.”
Mr. Colossi was referring to current customer-care campaigns such as the Colorado and Trailblazer Maintenance Cost Guarantee programs, the Chevy Plus customer-care program and the ‘Buy Chevrolet, Get Gold’ program. In fact, due to overwhelming response, the ‘Buy Chevrolet, Get Gold’ campaign has been extended to March 31, 2013. Launched to thank its customers for their support, the campaign awards one baht of gold for every purchase of a Captiva or a Colorado (except the 2.5L Crew-Car LS1 variant), two baht of gold for each Trailblazer purchased, and three baht of gold for each Cruze (except the 1.6L MT variant) purchased.
Chevrolet’s growth also continued across the Southeast Asian (SEA) region, with sales totaling 7,331 units in February 2013, 16 percent higher than the same month in 2012. All market across SEA recorded growth for the first two months of 2013, compared with the same period in 2012. Major growth markets, apart from Thailand, include Indonesia (920 units, +36% YTD), Philippines (752 units, +31% YTD) and Malaysia (265 units, +26% YTD).
“In addition to growing sales, our plan is also to grow our brand and product footprint in Thailand, as you already know, and across the Southeast Asian region. We will also be expanding into new markets, and towards this end we will be opening a new dealership in Cambodia soon. More people across the region will be able to enjoy our products, as we move along.” Colossi said.
For its first-class facility in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Chevrolet will partner with United Auto Trading, an affiliate company of Goodwill Trading. Goodwill Trading has more than 14 years of experience in the Cambodian automotive industry and is one of the country’s largest importer and distributor of motor vehicles. The new dealership will have a display area of 950 square-meters and a service area of 1,050 square-meters, the latter featuring 10 service bays with seven lifts. Cambodian motorists can look forward to a range of exciting Chevrolet models including the Captiva, Colorado, Cruze, Spark and Tahoe.
Mr. Colossi added, “While we focus on our growth and expansion plans, we are equally committed to ensure uncompromising quality in our products and their its delivery to our dealers and customers. We have been meeting these objectives and will continue to do so, especially in view of increasing demand for our products.”
