Community Development
Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial
The GM Foundation and General Motors contributed more than $10 million to the MLK Foundation for the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial that was dedicated on October 16, 2011. The monument is the first to honor a man of color on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It will also be the first memorial on the National Mall to honor an individual other than a U.S. President.
Plant City Grants
The GM Foundation’s Plant City Grants, totaling more than $1 million in 2012, are awarded to help fund the efforts of nonprofits located near GM facilities. The money supports a variety of initiatives, including plant city food banks and local environmental projects.
Community Centers
The GM Foundation donated $2 million to the Detroit Economic Growth Association to upgrade the Lasky and Williams Community Centers near the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant.
Focus: Hope
The GM Foundation has donated $2.5 million to Focus: Hope’s education initiatives, including the organization’s Center for Advanced Technologies. For more than 40 years, Focus: HOPE has been dedicated to finding intelligent and practical solutions to the problems of hunger, economic disparity, inadequate education and racial divisiveness in metro Detroit.

The GM Foundation donated $100,000 to the Foundation for the National Archives to provide support and educational outreach for the "Benjamin Franklin: In Search of a Better World" exhibit.
As part of its Plant City Grants program, the GM Foundation donated $2,500 to the Lost River Cave, $2,500 to the Boys and Girls Club and $5,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the Bowling Green, Kentucky community
