Overview
GM Nigeria was the first vehicle assembly plant in Nigeria. GM’s business operations in the region date back to 1927 when Lagos-based UAC of Nigeria Ltd. began marketing Vauxhall, Buick, and Chevrolet passenger cars. In 1965, the Vehicle Assembly Plant became Federated Motor Industries. It was granted official status as a progressive manufacturer of commercial vehicles in 1979. At that stage, vehicles were locally assembled from completely knocked down parts to complement the imported fully built units. In September 1991, GM Nigeria Ltd. was formed, with UACN PLC having 60 percent equity. General Motors has 30 percent equity, and the employees have 10 percent.
