Facilities
General Motors de Mexico is a socially responsible company committed to the communities in which it operates and to the protection of ecosystems.
The dedication of General Motors de Mexico in terms of the environment goes beyond simple compliance with laws to include the integration of firm practices in business decisions. As proof of this, in 1994 General Motors de Mexico proactively became the industry pioneer in voluntary environmental audits.
As a result, the environmental authority named General Motors de Mexico a "Clean Industry" for having demonstrated compliance with environmental regulations and having voluntarily accepted the responsibility of protecting its workers, neighboring communities and the environment. This action created a domino effect throughout the rest of the industry.
Environmental Excellence
Within the context of the National Environmental Audit Program carried out by the Federal Environmental Protection Office, General Motors de Mexico was recently awarded the Environmental Excellence distinction by former president Vicente Fox Quesada.
This was the first award to the industry in Mexico of this highest distinction of environmental performance. GM de Mexico was selected because of its commitment to stewardship of natural resources and the environment through highly-efficient production processes. This recognition is part of one of the Mexican government's key strategies: the creation of mechanisms for voluntary participation in environmental compliance.
Environment
General Motors was the first industry leader to associate with the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) in the "Climate Leaders" program, with the goal of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in its operations. To achieve this, the company conducts ongoing research on climate change and for development of new technologies as alternatives to traditional fuels. Recently, GM has developed innovative proposals to replace gas with electricity, hydrogen and ethanol, among other sources.
Company plants in Mexico are committed to preventing pollution, complying with applicable legal and corporate environmental requirements, evaluating environmental impact of company activities and reducing this impact by establishing appropriate goals and objectives.
In order to coordinate efforts to prevent pollution, the Environmental Management System was established in April 1998, in accordance with ISO 14001, becoming one of the first to obtain such certification.
Thanks to its emphasis on energy efficiency, General Motors de Mexico has received the National Award for Electrical Energy Savings for responsible operations within a culture of savings and rational use of resources.
Protection of Biodiversity
In 2006, General Motors began operations at the Cupuán del Río Test Track in Michoacán. In accordance with our environmental principles, we have carried out actions to protect the black and green iguanas native to the area. We have also built two hatcheries to aid in the preservation of this endangered species.
Similarly, General Motors has supported, through The Nature Conservancy (TNC), the protection of flamingos and other endangered species in Yucatán, Chiapas, Tabasco and Quintana Roo. In the northeastern part of the country, the company supports the Cuatro Cienegas flora and fauna reserve, and, in Coahuila, we support Reservas Pozas Azules, a 6,920 acre area with over 140 unique natural pools, where NASA and other national and international institutions are currently conducting research related to the origins of life.
Water Savings
General Motors de Mexico complies with all governmental regulations relating to water treatment and industrial waste disposal. As part of our commitment to the environment, we use innovative technologies in all of our plants for water and wastewater treatment, in order to optimize production processes.
Recycling
During the production cycle, from conception to manufacturing, General Motors balances economic and environmental requirements. In all of our industrial practices, our products use more recycled materials and finished vehicles have more efficient drive trains.
Supporting Communities
Our actions at General Motors are focused on ensuring the advancement and welfare of communities, meeting community needs and directing resources to provide real benefits.
The most immediate relationship with communities is our workforce. Globally, General Motors employs around 280,000 men and women, of which about 13,000 work in Mexico. In addition to direct jobs, the company is also indirectly responsible for hundreds of thousands of jobs through our vast network of vendors and distributors.
Education
As part of our commitment to the community, we have focused efforts on the education of new generations of Mexicans.
Since 1981, General Motors de Mexico, in coordination with the Ministry of Public Education, has offered a Technical Automotive Training Program, through which engines are donated to institutions of secondary and higher education, and internships made available for students at our workshops and plants.
Currently, the company has collaborative relationships with several major universities in Mexico for sharing expertise through conferences in finance, technology, marketing, automotive engineering and design.

- GM Mexico operations now recycle 94.5% of their hazardous and non-hazardous wastes. As a result of this recycling rate, all Mexico facilities eliminated the disposal of hazardous wastes in landfill beginning in August 2003. Hazardous waste is now recycled or used as alternative fuel. Since 2000, land filled waste has been reduced from 7,369 metric tons to 444 metric tons during 2003. The financial savings from this are calculated to be $990,173. Additionally Non-Hazardous Waste landfill has been reduced from 3,188 to 2,340 metric tons from 2003 to 2004, which means a reduction of 27 percent.
- The Silao Assembly Plant has reduced water consumption by 40 percent since the start of production in 1996
- The Ramos Arizpe plant has been internationally recognized for its water conservation initiatives.
- In 2004 the President of Mexico Vicente Fox recognized GMM Ramos Arizpe and Silao facilities with the Environmental Excellence Award for their achievements and GMM commitment to the environment.
