In 1968, General Motors became the first automotive company to establish a formal supplier diversity program. Our mission then remains what it is now: To develop and grow a performance-based, world-class, competitive diversity supply base that will work with General Motors towards its goal of being the market leader in the automotive industry.
It is General Motors' policy to help minorities, women, and small business (8(a) Certified Small Business, HUB-Zone Small Business, Small Disadvantaged Business, Woman-Owned Small Business, and Veteran-Owned Small Business/Service -Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business) achieve economic equality by fostering and encouraging diverse enterprise. We recognize that an effective means of accomplishing this is through the placement of appropriate business with diverse suppliers of goods and services.
GM works with more than 200 certified minority and female-owned companies and currently has executive leadership committed to mentoring over 30 of the top Tier 1 diverse suppliers. This process assists select minority and female-owned suppliers in developing business plans and identifying improvement strategies and new business opportunities. It is a proven way of ensuring the success of our highest-performing diverse suppliers.
