GM Leads Fundraising for MLK Memorial

This year, the MLK Foundation gained additional corporate support and it has started a nationwide grassroots faith-based initiative to introduce the memorial project to congregations at places of worship in key cities throughout the country.

This faith-based initiative includes a series of regional church-based events culminating in a "day of giving" when funds will be raised to help build the memorial. The initiative kicked-off in Detroit on April 4 and will continue in Montgomery, Houston, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C.

Executive Leadership Cabinet

To complement the fundraising campaign, the MLK Foundation established a committee of business leaders, from varied industries, to help boost corporate support of the memorial project. Known as the Executive Leadership Cabinet (ELC), these individuals are considered the principal ambassadors of the “Build the Dream” campaign, charged with cultivating and soliciting major corporate gifts.

In addition to raising or giving $1 million to the memorial project, the ELC assists in identifying prospective donors and recruiting of new ELC members.

The ELC is co-chaired by Gary Cowger, global group vice president, General Motors Corp., and U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young. Currently, its members include:
