In 2005, GM's global facilities emitted 11.68 million metric tons of CO₂ (see graph), a 15.5 percent decrease compared to 2000 - surpassing the global target of an 8 percent reduction from 2000-2005.  CO₂ emissions are calculated from fuel and electricity use at each facility, which are the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions from operations.

GM’s new global facility CO₂ reduction target is an additional 8 percent from 2005-2010.
