Portugal - History

Portugal

GM has been doing business in Portugal since 1930.

During the first years, brands such as Buick, Pontiac and Chevrolet were some of the most popular in the Portuguese market.

After World War II, a new company was created (GM Overseas Corporation – Lisbon Branch) starting to import and sell Opel and Vauxhall cars. Since then, Opel consistently became a front-runner in the sales ranking. In 1959, the Company changes its designation to "General Motors de Portugal".

Four years later, in 1963, the plant in Azambuja (45 km North of Lisbon) is inaugurated.

After changing to "Opel Portugal", in 1995, the Company retakes the designation "GM Portugal" in April 2005.

GM Portugal has a workforce of around 139 employees.

Since 1950 until today, the Company sold more than 800,000 vehicles in Portugal (Opel, Vauxhall, Bedford, Isuzu, Chevrolet and other American brands).
