Celebrating Earth Day

Earth Day is a time to learn how we can protect our world.

Earth Day celebrates our environment. Every year, on April 22, people work for the environment by recycling, planting trees, and cleaning up parks and rivers. This has been a tradition since 1970.

When was the first Earth Day?

During the 1960s, people became very worried about air pollution, water pollution and pesticides.

Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin and student Denis Hayes helped create a day devoted to cleaning up the Earth. Twenty million Americans gathered in Washington, D.C., on April 22, 1970, for the first Earth Day celebration.

Less than a year later, Congress passed the Clean Air Act, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was created. Its job is to make rules to protect the environment.
