This clip, taken from a promotional film documenting GM's Progress of Power exhibition at the GM Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, in 1969, shows running footage of not one but three experimental urban cars developed by General Motors.

Back then the emphasis was clearly on size, or more accurately the lack of it, to improve fuel efficiency.

By comparison, today’s GM technology allows for safe, roomy, well-appointed vehicles that require even less fuel than those boxy little prototypes. But, as with all great achievements, you have to start somewhere.
