Featured Vehicles: Chevy Express and GMC Savana

The full-size Chevy Express and GMC Savana provide abundant interior space, cargo capacity,1 and accessibility that wheelchair and scooter users especially appreciate. Express and Savana are practical choices for installing adaptive equipment, such as wheelchair lifts, ramps, running boards, and driver aids, available from independent aftermarket suppliers.2

What's more, the Express and Savana offer amenities, options, and safety features that help make every outing more comfortable and secure.

General Motors has specially developed certain vehicle components to facilitate the adaptive equipment installation process and help maintain the integrity of the vehicles' engineering, quality, and safety standards during that process.

GM Reimbursement Program - get up to $1000Under the GM Mobility Reimbursement Program, eligible adaptive equipment installed (or reinstalled) on an eligible purchased or leased new Express or Savana van is eligible for up to $1,000 reimbursement.

Recently, the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA), an organization committed to ensuring quality and professionalism in the manufacturing and installation of safe and reliable mobility equipment in vehicles, has developed specific guidelines for its member companies to use when installing lowered floor conversions on Express and Savana.3 Learn more about NMEDA by visiting www.nmeda.org.

Safety

Stabilitrak in action

The federal government's highest frontal crash test rating — five stars — for driver and front-seat passenger. Government star ratings are part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program. Learn more by visiting www.safercar.gov.

Available All-Wheel-Drive4 — a feature not available on Ford E-Series — is a full-time, single-speed system that normally operates in a 35/65 (front/rear) torque split mode. Once rear-wheel slippage is sensed, torque is automatically transferred to the front tires for added traction when needed.

StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control System improves vehicle stability, particularly on slick surfaces or during emergency maneuvers. StabiliTrak is standard and only available on 3500 Passenger Van models. Here's how it works:

  • The system uses an array of sensors coupled with a master electronic control module to constantly monitor the driver's steering commands.
  • Control module measurements include steering angle, wheel speed, brake pressure, and other factors.
  • StabiliTrak intervenes when it senses one or more of the wheels slipping, loss of lateral traction (side slip), understeer (plowing), or oversteer (fishtailing).
  • In these instances, the system applies brake pressure and, if necessary, adjusts engine torque to help the driver get the vehicle back on track.

Four-wheel ABS and Dynamic Rear Proportioning are standard on all Express and Savana models. They help the driver maintain steering control by reducing wheel lockup while braking hard on most slippery surfaces.

Regular and Extended Wheelbase models. A longer wheelbase can help increase vehicle stability, which allows the driver more control under various road conditions. Chevy Express and GMC Savana both offer a regular wheelbase at 135 inches and an extended wheelbase at 155 inches. GM Extended Wheelbase models are longer than available Ford E-Series passenger vans.

PASSlock theft-deterrent system, standard.
