Community Development

Investing in communities

Community development is defined as generating solutions for common problems. At GM, we recognize the importance to help individuals attain marketable technical and vocational skills, overcome economic barriers, and positively impact neighborhoods with innovative social improvements.

We have engaged with dozens of nonprofits to help:
Our 2020 investment goals impacted an estimated 65,000 individuals around the U.S.

35

small businesses received support in Flint, MI and Buffalo, NY

6,400

free rides to alleviate transportation barriers

1,300

women of color received entrepreneurship education

GM is helping to provide access to:

Energy Jobs
From solar panel installation to urban gardeners and EV service technicians, the future of work is looking more sustainable than ever. GM’s goal is to help vulnerable adults build skills that enable them to benefit from the transition to new jobs.

Sustainable Transportation
Electric vehicles are at an inflection point, but still out of reach for many consumers, especially those with lower socioeconomic status. GM will support programs that increase awareness and access to the benefits of electrification and/or infrastructure to help close these gaps.

Community Climate Action
Underserved communities are disproportionately affected by climate change. From urban heat islands to flooding and drought, every community has its own story and a unique set of needs. GM will work with community-level organizations to support programs aimed at climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience.

Since the program’s inception in 2011, employees have lent their hands and hearts by volunteering 1 million hours in 28 different countries.
