At GM, we build trusted and personalized experiences to help you get the most from your vehicle. Explore how we use data to power these experiences, the ways we protect your information, and the choices you have about what you share.
Privacy choices are available across the GM experiences you use every day. We put controls directly at your fingertips.
We believe in transparency. No matter how you interact with us, we help you understand the information used to enable and personalize services.
For more than a century, people have trusted GM with their safety. Today, that commitment extends to the privacy and security of the data that underpins the connected features you use every day.
OnStar can help make driving easier and provide support when you need it with features like turn-by-turn navigation and emergency response services. To do this, OnStar uses your vehicle’s location data. Model year 2019 and later vehicles may have an option to disable OnStar location services through the privacy settings on the vehicle infotainment system. If location services are turned off, most connected services will no longer have access to your vehicle’s location. For your safety, we can still locate your vehicle in emergencies, such as a crash. If you don’t want to share your location data for any purpose at all, even for emergencies services, you can unenroll from OnStar services at any time. Unenrolling from OnStar will remove your vehicle from all connected services.
Vehicles equipped with Google built-in can help make driving more convenient with features like navigation and the ability to find nearby places, such as restaurants, gas stations, and EV charging stations. Just like on your mobile device, if you choose to use these apps and accept the third-party’s terms of service and privacy policies, they will use your vehicle’s location to deliver those features. You can enable or disable location settings for most apps on your infotainment system.

Connected Cameras help you see what matters, wherever you are. You can enable connected camera recordings and live view by pairing your vehicle with the mobile app. Once enabled, you can choose if security events are recorded in the cloud and/or local USB storage. GM cannot access your recordings or live view. Authorization for each “Live View” session must be provided from the infotainment screen. You must accept the consent in the vehicle before it will activate.
Sharing external camera and associated data can help GM improve active safety, driver assistance, and automated driving technologies. External camera data you chose to share is de-identified shortly after collection and before any research starts, so it is not linked to you or your vehicle. And once you share, you can pause this data collection at anytime using the in-vehicle privacy settings from the infotainment home screen. You can permanently turn it off in your web account in the Data & Privacy tab, or by speaking with an OnStar Advisor at 1-888-466-7827.
Manage video and associated data in your account
OnStar AI Assistant lets you get help using natural conversation. You choose what it can access, including your microphone, location, contacts, text messages, and phone. You can change these permissions anytime, including whether the assistant listens for “Hey OnStar.” When “Listen for ‘Hey OnStar’” is enabled, your vehicle’s microphone is always on so that OnStar AI Assistant can detect when you want to interact. Audio always remains on the vehicle. When you interact with the assistant, your transcripts are collected to provide a response and to improve your experience. You can turn off OnStar AI Assistant anytime in vehicle settings.
